An industrial modern manhattan-style living within a rich historic district.
Referencing the etymology of the word “Geylang”, which might have been a corruption of the Malay word “kilang” meaning press, mill or factory, with the existing red brick façade reminiscent of industrialization, Mill@32 suggests an industrial modern manhattan-style living within a rich historic district.
The name “Mill” was chosen because upon abstracting the characters of “M” and “L” into roman numerals, they form “III” and “II” respectively which together, represent the number “32” of the Lorong; while the remaining character “i” represents the building number “1”, thus giving form to its location: 1 Lorong 32 Geylang.
The replacement of the existing creams and oranges to monochromatic greys and blacks on the façade not only modernizes but better reflect the new character of the building.
Where an exposed black metal framed canopy with agricultural netting meets an extended terraced timber deck below lies the social heart of Mill@32, a shared and well-shaded platform where both formal and informal activities can occur.
Reaching out to a diverse audience, the unit scheme of Old School Cool – the typically vintage, raw and cool vibe of dark industrial living, was complemented by and contrasted with the unit scheme of Industrial Chic where industrial living becomes young and hip in a chic, cozy and refreshing environment.
